UNIT 1 2

Preliminary Comments

The Kingdom Exercise calls us to follow and serve with our King. This week we begin to consider the difficulties of such discipleship. With the help of the Two Standards Exercise, we begin to see the value of knowing our sinful tendencies—and the persons who have played upon them—so as not to come under their sway again.24

It is helpful at this point in the Exercises to begin lengthening the time of silence between your reading of the Scripture passages. Give this time to the Holy Spirit and allow God to use the silence to transform your heart and mind.

Occasionally, sensitive persons are offended by the strong military imagery of this Ignatian parable. If this is the case for you, spend some time and rewrite it in images appropriate to your context. (Everyone is asked to do this at the end of unit 13.)

THEME : As I hear the Lord’s call to serve with him,

I also experience the tug of riches and honor.

GRACE : Lord Jesus, allow me to recognize and hate evil, and so follow only your will.25

Day 1

In section 1 of your journal, record day, time, place, and condition.

Contemplatio: In section 2 of your journal, briefly record your experience of God’s love since you met with your listener.

Meditatio: After repeating the theme several times, ask for the grace. Pausing for several minutes of silence between each reading, read Ephesians 6:10–13 three times. Spend at least thirty minutes considering the Preparation and First Point of the Two Standards Exercise (p. 180).26

Oratio: Discuss your battle. Ask for grace to be true to your Lord.

Record summaries of your meditation in section 3, your discussion in section 4, and your experience of the grace in section 5 in your journal.

Day 2

In section 1 of your journal, record day, time, place, and condition.

Contemplatio: In section 2 of your journal, record your experience of the theme and grace since your last journal entry.

Meditatio: After repeating the theme several times, ask for the grace. Pausing for several minutes of silence between each reading, read Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43 three times. Spend at least thirty minutes considering the First Point of the Two Standards Exercise.

Oratio: Discuss this with the Lord and thank him for his call in your life.

Record summaries of your meditation in section 3, your discussion in section 4, and your experience of the grace in section 5 in your journal.

Day 3

In section 1 of your journal, record day, time, place, and condition.

Contemplatio: In section 2 of your journal, record your experience of the theme and grace since your last journal entry.

Meditatio: After repeating the theme several times, ask for the grace. Pausing for several minutes of silence between each reading, read Luke 18:18–30 three times. Spend at least thirty minutes considering the First Point of the Two Standards Exercise.

Oratio: Discuss this with the Lord and thank him for his call in your life.

Record summaries of your meditation in section 3, your discussion in section 4, and your experience of the grace in section 5 in your journal.
